1986 MargauxWine Spectator: 93 "Racy and powerful. Black color. Currants, tar and dried herbs. Full-bodied, with firm tannins. Slightly hollow center palate--a bit of a letdown. Better with more bottle age.-- "The 1986 Margaux continues to be the most powerful, tannic, and muscular Margaux made in decades. One wonders if the 1928 or 1945 had as much power and depth as the 1986? The black/ruby/purple color reveals no sign of age. The reluctant nose offers up aromas of smoky, toasty new oak and black currants, as well as a few flowers. The wine is mammoth, with extraordinary extract, superb balance, and a frightfully tannic finish. This is a Margaux of immense stature, made in a masculine, full-bodied style that is in complete contrast to the 1990. It should prove nearly immortal in terms of aging potential." |

Château Lafite-Rothschild is one of the Bordeaux First Growths that lies in the Pauillac appellation controlleé. The origin of Lafite's name comes from the Gascon term la hite meaning "small hill." In the 17th century, the vineyards were owned by Alexandre de Segur, also proprietor of Chateau Latour. After the French revolution, the château was purchased by several Dutch merchants before the current owners, the Rothschild family, acquired it in 1868. Château Lafite-Rothschild is one of the largest Médoc estates producing 15,000 to 25,000 cases per year. The grand vin is composed primarily of Cabernet Sauvignon (up to 95%) with the balance divided between Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Lafite has a balanced elegance supported by the structure of its tannins. It is both full-bodied and silky. Aromas include currant, leather, graphite and tobacco. As Lafite ages, it reveals more minerals as well as almond, violet, and cedar.

1983 LatourWine Spectator: 94"A solid, firm wine with a tannin structure that is softening. Aromas of chocolate, ripe fruit and meat. Full-bodied, with loads of fruit and tannins and a long, long finish. Thick and chewy. Gorgeous.--Latour vertical." Wine Advocate: 88 "Tasted from my cellar, this wine is fully mature, not terribly concentrated, and slightly herbaceous, exhibiting aromas of sweaty saddle leather, melted asphalt, tobacco, and red as well as black fruits. Notions of caramel and roasted nuts also emerge. A medium-bodied effort with soft tannin, but little persistence and length, it requires consumption over the next decade." |
